Kerala-Thiruvananthapuram
By Our Staff Reporter
The police have zeroed in on three persons with criminal antecedents in connection with the robbery. "We believe they are residents of the city. The available evidence points to the involvement of the three whom we suspect. A breakthrough in the case is expected soon," the Circle Inspector, Nemom, Ajay Babu, said. The cashier, Anand, had been tailed by a three-member armed gang on a motorcycle for some time before he was intercepted, knocked off his motorbike and robbed of the money which he was carrying in a shoulder-bag. Anand used to carry large sums of money regularly from his head office in the city to the branch office in Kovalam through the same route. The waylaying incident, which occurred at around 10 a.m., had caused a sensation. The police are not discounting the possibility that a fourth person could have abetted the crime. The abettor could be somebody who knew that cash was being taken regularly on the National Highway Bypass route to the branch office of the company at Kovalam. It was possible that the abettor was somebody who knew the operations of the foreign exchange firm closely. Anand had told the police that there was no one around when he was waylaid. The robbers were between the age of 20 and 25. One was wearing a dhoti while the other two were wearing pants and shirt. After the robbery, the gang had sped away towards Pachalloor. One of the gang members used a dagger to cut the strap of the bag in which the money was being carried. Though he was shown police file photographs of known criminals specialising in robbery of similar nature, the cashier had not been able to identify any of them.
