The resolution was adopted at the Sangham's three-day 14th State convention, which concluded here on Sunday. Other resolutions passed included completion of first stage of SRSP, Devadula, Madhava Reddy, SRBC, Telugu Ganga and Somasila on a war-footing, allocation of sufficient funds for the second stage of SRSP, SRSP Flood Flow Canal and implementation of desert prevention programme in Anantapur district. Further, the APRS demanded allocation of funds for several lift irrigation schemes proposed by late Sivaramakrishnaiah for utilisation of Godavari water for Telangana region, Yellampalli, Dummugudem, Penuganga, Pranahita, Thotapalli and others. Similarly, Pulichintala should be taken up with the consent of all parties. Keeping in view the severe drought the APRS demanded Rs. 1,000 per acre as compensation to the uncultivated lands and Rs. 2,000 for crop failure. Each drought-hit family should be given 50 kg rice every month and crop loans up to Rs. 20,000 be waived. Drinking water and fodder should be supplied on a war-footing. Besides, the meet demanded payment of ex gratia of Rs. 1 lakh each to the families of farmers who had committed suicide, amendment to the crop insurance so that it would become useful for farmers and change in the WTO laws to suit farmers.
New office-bearers
The convention also elected a new body. While K. Nageswara Rao, was elected the new president, T.V. Chowdary, was the new general secretary. The other office-bearers were: M. Nageswara Rao, R. Venkaiah, P. Venkateswara Rao, G. Yadagiri Reddy, P. Ramachandraiah and U. Narayana Rao (vice-presidents).
