35 injured in J&K blast

By Shujaat Bukhari

JAMMU JAN. 5. At least 35 people, including four Central Reserve Police Force personnel, were injured when suspected militants lobbed a grenade at a CRPF patrol party in the crowded Kulgam bus stand in South Kashmir, police sources said.

Soon after the grenade exploded, security forces cordoned off the bus stand but the militants fled taking advantage of the panic among the people, the sources added. The injured, who included some women, were admitted to the sub-district hospital in Kulgam and some of them were referred to the Anantnag district hospital.

Soldier killed

A soldier was killed and a house damaged in renewed shelling from across the border in North Kashmir.

Defence sources said Pakistani troops resorted to unprovoked shelling and heavy firing over the Rani Post in the Uri sector killing the jawan. ``Retaliatory action was initiated to suppress the enemy fire,'' a spokesman said in Srinagar. In Jammu region, heavy mortar shelling from across the border at Loroka village in Noushera sub-sector damaged one house, while 20 animals were killed.
