Letters to the Editor
Sir, The Editorial "Precept and practice" (Jan. 2) is a judicial analysis of the Prime Minister, Atal Behari Vajpayee's "Goa musings". Obviously, the main thrust of the exercise was to equate "secularism" as enshrined in the Constitution with "Hindutva", besides amplification of "Hindutva" and "Bharateeyata" as being expressions of the same thought. In order to give a judicial colour, the Supreme Court's interpretation of Hindutva as neither a religious nor a political concept but connoting a noble and elevating way of life is being advanced. The apex court has not equated secularism with Hindutva which happens to be the garb of the BJP and the Sangh Parivar to thwart the meaningful secularist approach that has stood the test of time.
