TATA ENGINEERING (Telco) launched its much-awaited Tata Indigo recently in Pune. It is positioned as a comfortable, spacious, premium feature sedan with class leading ride and handling characteristics in the midsize (C) segment. Developed on the Indica platform but as a three-box version, the Indigo will be available in three petrol and two diesel versions in six attractive colours. The Indigo petrol car comes with an 85 bhp engine, while the diesel version is the only vehicle in this class with a turbo charged engine. An entirely new power train, a three link independent suspension and large 14" wheels are the unique features of the car. An extended wheelbase with a semi forward profile helps maintain a compact overall length and large interior space without compromising the manoeuvrability of the car in tight traffic conditions. The indigo is set to establish a new benchmark for comfort and interior space in its own segment. The exterior styling is accentuated with the latest technology of clear headlamps and trapezoidal taillights that merge with a contemporarily styled profile, giving the car a trendy and modern appeal. Although the car is not available for test drives freely, going by the track record of the Indica, which has broken the sales record of the most popular car of the country Maruti for the last six months, the Indigo should do well in the coming months. The car comes with all options depending on ones needs and is competitively priced. With 450 litres of trunk space and a 42- litre fuel tank capacity, the Indigo is appropriately suited for long family drives on weekends and vacations. The car has undergone extensive and rigorous tests at the internationally reputed test facilities of MIRA, U.K. It also complies with European safety norms of full frontal, offset and rear impact. The Indigo, with an 18 month unlimited kilometre warranty, will be available through 100 dealerships backed by a 438-strong service network across 168 cities. The GLE petrol version with manual steering but with an air conditioner will be available in Delhi for Rs. 4.35 lakhs. The petrol GLS with a power steering thrown in will cost Rs. 4.60 lakhs. And the top end GLX with all options will be costing Rs. 4.95 lakhs. All these engines have the latest state-of-the-art water-cooled MPFI system with all the pollution control gizmos. The diesel version with a water-cooled direct injection 1.4-litre turbo assisted LS model, power steering and HVAC will cost Rs. 4.80 lakhs. The LS top end model with all options will cost Rs. 5.20 lakhs. Looking at the price tag and the options available one can say this vehicle is going to give value for money to the consumer and nightmare to competition.
