NHRC seeks report on `torture' of school student

By Our Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM Dec. 17. The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has directed the DGP to submit a report on the alleged torture and harassment of Sherin S. Raj, a ninth class student, by three teachers of the Pattom St. Mary's Higher Secondary School in the city on September 19, 2001.

The directive was issued on the basis of a complaint by the boy's father, P. M. Rajan, a resident of Madathuvilakom in Peroorkada. Mr. Rajan had filed a complaint with the police, the Petitions Committee of the Assembly as well as the State Human Rights Commission before approaching the NHRC in September last.

According to the complaint, the three teachers had taken Sherin to an isolated place on the third floor of the school auditorium building and tortured the boy physically and mentally. Sherin had to undergo treatment at the Peroorkada Government Hospital due to the torture.

The boy's father had shifted him to the Model Higher Secondary School following the incident on the advice of the St. Mary's School authorities.
