MCH relents on release of funds

By Our Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD Dec. 17. Having turned down the request earlier, the MCH Standing Committee has decided to extend monetary aid to the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSB) to help procure Krishna waters to the city.

At its meeting on Tuesday, the Standing Committee unanimously resolved to deposit Rs. 35 crores as term deposit in the State Bank of Hyderabad for a period of six months as a "goodwill gesture''.

It might be recalled that the HMWSSB Managing Director had requested the MCH Commissioner to spare Rs. 80 crores out of its bond amount as "bridge finance'' to meet the requirement for augmenting water supply to the twin cities by 45 MGD from the river Krishna. Following a meeting held with the Chief Minister in October, the MCH was requested to release a sum of Rs. 35 crores immediately and the balance in due course.

When the issue came before the Standing Committee on November 27, it was rejected by majority of members. While the BJP and TDP corporators gave their nod for depositing Rs. 35 crores, the Majlis members refused. They wanted the State Government to come up with a specific proposal and to stand guarantee to the amount sought from the MCH.

In today's meeting, all the Standing Committee members agreed to spare the money for the HMWSSB. One member, Mohd. Sharieff, of the Congress, was absent.

With regard to the MCH budget for 2003-04, the Standing Committee decided to hold a special meeting on December 24 at 11 a.m. to discuss the draft proposal. The Standing Committee Chairman, M. Madhu, said the Rs. 542-crore budget proposal would be later placed before the general body for its approval by January 10.

The Standing Committee further discussed the proposal for purchase of 250 dumper bins costing Rs. 37 lakhs. However, no decision was taken and the issue was postponed to next meeting.
