A bundle of errors in new phone directory

By Divya Sreedharan

BANGALORE Dec. 17. Volume one of the 2002-2003 Bangalore Telephone Directory makes for interesting reading, especially when it comes to who is "in" and who is "not".

Consider these few examples from the power sector. The Bangalore Electricity Supply Company (Bescom) carved out of the Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Ltd. (KPTCL) on June 1 rates just one mention on page 56. A HAL 2nd Stage address is also given.

The directory does not give the name and telephone number of the Managing Director of Bescom, P.B. Ramamurthy, or the number of the Bescom office near the K.R. Circle. As for the KPTCL, the directory reveals only too well, how confusing frequent transfers of officials can become. The KPTCL MD's name is given as V.P. Baligar. Mr. Baligar, however, was appointed Commissioner for Public Instruction four or five months ago. The new KPTCL MD is K. N. Srivastava. Likewise, the name of the KPTCL Director (Personnel and Information Technology) is given as Sanjeev Kumar. The post is vacant and Mr. Kumar has been appointed Commissioner for Health and Family Welfare.

A similar error has occurred in the listing for the Karnataka Renewable Energy Development Ltd. (KREDL). The name of its MD is given as Vijayabhaskar, who was posted as MD of Visvesvaraya Vidyut Nigam Ltd. as early as March 2002. Now, B. Shivalingaiah, former Chairman of the State Pollution Control Board, is the MD of KREDL. The BSNL officials were surprised to hear about the mistakes, and said they would look into the matter. Often, they were unable to keep track of when and where IAS officers were posted to, officials said.

"The new volumes 1 and 2 are meant to replace the old volume 1'', they said. Some three lakh directories had already been printed. Another three lakh was to be printed soon. "We plan to bring out CD-ROMs as well,'' the officials added.
