'Re-establish contact with masses'

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI DEC. 17. Apart from the `national theme' of the need for the Chief Minister and AIADMK general secretary, Ms. Jayalalithaa, to become the Prime Minister, speakers at the general council meeting here today concentrated on problems within the party.

While presenting their road map for the development of the party, many of them wanted Ministers and seniors to explain to the people the achievements of the Government.

Some of them felt that there was a gap between the people and the Government, because of which various schemes were not fully appreciated by the people. The real problem visualised by several speakers was loss of direct contact with the people.

Unless, ministers and party seniors re-established contact with the masses, the party would be unable to make further strides.

Another grievance was that lower level functionaries did not get due respect within the organisation.

Apparently, for many of them, the real issue was getting the attention of Ms. Jayalalithaa. And ministers and party seniors came in the way.

Interestingly, low-cost sarees and dhotis, offered at a rebate by the Government to help weavers, were sold at the conference venue.
