Cabinet nod for renaming Amethi

Lucknow Dec. 17. Brushing aside opposition from the Congress and reservations from a section of the BJP, the Uttar Pradesh Government today decided to rename Amethi, the Gandhi family's political borough, as Chhatrapati Sahuji Maharaj Nagar according it a district status.

The State Cabinet, which met here, gave its approval to the proposal , official sources said, days after the Chief Minister, Mayawati, stormed the town and attacked the Gandhi family.

Ms. Mayawati's visit was in protest against Priyanka Gandhi recently storming a police station championing the cause of a Dalit youth. — PTI
