His appointment comes at a time when the company is readying itself for marketing the next generation class 5 switch that is directly interoperable with a packet based infrastructure. Before joining Alcatel, Mr. Sharma had worked with Eurostar, British Telecom and the UB group. Present in the country since 1982 through one alliance or other, Alcatel now manufactures switching and transmission equipment at its Gurgaon-based factory. In fact, Alcatel was among the six multinationals that were compelled by a telecom policy framed by Rajesh Pilot to set up manufacturing facilities in the country in alliance with Indian companies. It also has a software development centre in Chennai.
