Govt. cold to plight of poor: Alandur councillors

By K. Manikandan

CHENNAI DEC. 17 . Three weeks after the demolition of houses and shops on Medavakkam Main Road, the incident continued to have its echo at a meeting of the Alandur municipality held on Monday. Councillors wanted to know what steps had been taken to provide resettlement for the evicted persons.

They were of the opinion that justice was yet to be rendered to the evicted and wondered why the Government was cold to the plight of the poor. The Chairman, R.S. Bharathi, replied that a petition urging proper resettlement of the evicted persons had been filed in the Madras High Court.

Further, resolution no. 28, which stated that a sum of Rs. 1.47 lakhs as dues in the form of taxes was yet to be collected from the people in this particular ward where evictions took place, was postponed following a request from the local Councillor.

It was decided that the resolution could be taken up after the case was disposed of by the court. Councillors continued to complain of erratic and poor quality of water supply.
