`Al-Qaeda trading in diamonds'

By George Chakko

Vienna Dec. 17. The Austrian economist, Friedrich Schneider, Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Linz University in Lower Austrian state capital Linz and an internationally recognised expert on terror finances told The Hindu in an interview that the Al-Qaeda has found a new source of income in diamond trade and this would help it finance new terror acts. Prof. Schneider had briefed top Western secret services early January in Berlin on terror financing sources.

Weird as it might seem, the economist through pure economic analysis, arrived at non-economic conclusions. Prof. Schneider had first presented the results of his initial study and figures to Western Intelligence agencies. His information source and tools are the internet and other data high-ways connecting him to data banks of international banks, plus a lot of analytical computing, all open sources.
