Tension grips Bharatpur village over `cow slaughter'

JAIPUR DEC 11 . Tension built up leading to a bandh today in Rajasthan's Mewat village after beating of a Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) worker by a group of Mev community people over an issue of ``cow slaughter'' yesterday, a senior police official said here.

The situation got tense when the RSS worker Braham Deo Shashtri objected to a Mev community person taking cattle for slaughtering at Jurerah village in Bharatpur district, the official said, adding, the cattle were to be taken to Haryana on a regular basis.

Later Shashtri was manhandled at his residence yesterday by the people of the Mev community, he said.

Protesting against the incident and demanding arrest of culprits, about 250 VHP and Bajrang Dal workers headed by former BJP Minister Sampat Singh held a dharna and gave a bandh call, which the official said, went off peacefully.

The law and order situation was under control and the additional police force was deployed as a precautionary measure, he said.

Eight persons were today arrested who allegedly attacked the RSS workers and were named in the FIR, he added.

Meanwhile, in Lucknow, two persons were arrested for suspected cow slaughter in Mahrajganj district of Uttar Pradesh, police said here today.

Acting on a tip off, a police party reached Bandi Bilaspur village under Kothi Bhaar police station area yesterday and arrested two persons with the carcass of a cow, they said.

Four others involved in the case managed to escape, police said, adding security has been beefed up in the area to prevent any untoward incident. -- PTI
