Shilaru, Himachal Pradesh, Dec 11. Nine Congress workers were killed and 24 others injured when a private bus carrying them for a party rally here to be addressed by Sonia Gandhi fell into a deep gorge at Badsalput near Pujarli in Shimla district early today. Police said five people were killed on the spot and three succumbed to injuries on way to hospital. The ninth person died while being taken to Indira Gandhi Medical College hospital in Shimla. Police identified the deceased as Jia Lal Zinta, Amar Chand Nenta, Narvir Singh, Chaman Lal, Dhanpur, Prem Lata, Lahori Singh, Richpal and Mohinder. The injured were admitted to the Rohru hospital. Five seriously wounded were taken to the IGMC at Shimla. The ill-fated bus carrying Congress workers from Pujarli (Rohru) to Shilaru, was badly damaged as it tossed against boulders and stones during the fall. Local authorities and police have rushed to the site to launch rescue operations. Himachal Pradesh Governor Suraj Bhan and Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal have expressed shock over the accident and conveyed their condolences to the bereaved families. Mrs Gandhi, State Congress president Vidya Stokes and former Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh, who also addressed the rally, expressed their condolences to the bereaved families. -- UNI
