Advani for greater private role in tourism

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI DEC. 11. Even as the Deputy Prime Minister, L.K. Advani, today stressed on the need for greater private initiative in various fields, the Minister for Civil Aviation, Shahnawaz Hussain, ruled out disinvestment of Air India and Indian Airlines "for now".

Mr. Advani called for synergy of efforts by the Government and the private sector in tourism and civil aviation sector, with full participation from the people.

India had the "resources and talent" at its disposal and "earnest efforts'' by both public and private sectors were required to bring the country to the "forefront of the international comity in the 21st century", he said.

Inaugurating the 5th international conference on "Aviation and Tourism: Strategy in Changing Business Environment" here, Mr. Advani said the global environment had changed considerably and the private sector was now accepted with a positive frame of mind unlike in the past.

What was required was to "remove the sense of despair, negativism and self-flagellation".

Tourism could not develop without active participation of the people and domestic tourism had tremendous scope for growth.

Building up the infrastructure was an essential part of this. The conference was organised by the Foundation for Aviation and Sustainable Tourism.
