India, Russia sign protocol on arms exports

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI DEC 11. India and Russia have signed a protocol under which exports of armament system manufactured in India under licence from Russia to third countries will be considered on a case-by-case basis, the Defence Minister, George Fernandes, told the Rajya Sabha today.

Although Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) had already exported MiG-21 spares to 17 countries under various agreements, this protocol would enable future exports of missiles and spares of advanced fighter jets.

Both the countries had in the past expressed intentions to export the Brahmos supersonic missile, which was being jointly developed.

The missile was expected to go into serial production by 2004 and could be exported after the requirements of both the countries were met.
