Greenery projects near Games venue proceeding at hectic pace

HYDERABAD Dec. 11. With a day left for the inauguration of the 32nd National Games, beautification and greenery projects are progressing near the venues at a hectic pace. The Urban Forestry Department of the Hyderabad Urban Development Authority (HUDA) is developing landscapes and avenue plantations on the Old Bombay Highway from Dargah to Gachibowli stadium and on the Madhapur-Shilparamam-Gachibowli Road at a cost of Rs. 50 lakhs.

The Assistant Director, Urban Forestry, P. Rajender Reddy, who showed the ongoing landscaping and planatation works to mediapersons on Wednesday, said that of the 6.8 km Dargah to Gachibowli median, median plantation with tree guards, avenue plantation and median turfing was taken up along 5 km and landscaping in the rest. About 1,000 saplings were planted in the Central University campus adjoining the Gachibowli Stadium at the suggestion of the Chief Minister, he said.

On the Kondapur-Madhapur police station road, silver oak and mahogany median plantation along 4.5 km was taken up and rotary and kidney landscapes in 2,000 sq.m area, the

biggest in the city, in front of Shilparamam. While rotary landscape would have a variety of ornamental plants, the kidney landscapes would have only rose plants and the turf. Saplings were planted in the medians after drilling to remove concrete and stones, to ensure better survival rate. As many as 500 labourers and 40 drilling machines were engaged in the last one week to complete the work on a war footing.

The Director of Urban Forestry, Ramana Reddy, said that even the greenbelt areas of Inner Ring Road from Uppal junction to Rethibowli was being spruced up and some of the withered plants were replaced. So also the junction rotary gardens at L.B.nagar and Uppal were given a facelift with painting of the grills and adding new flowering plants.

Besides, the Begumpet and Masabtank flyovers were getting a fresh coat of paint and fountains were being installed at some places. Civil works were being executed at a cost of Rs. 30 lakhs, he said.
