Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday on the sidelines of a two-day workshop organised by the Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA) and the Wildlife Institute of India (WII) on "Networking and coordination of TED manufacture and promotion along the Indian coast" here on Tuesday, the Nodal Officer of the Government of India-UNDP Sea Turtle Project, B.C. Choudhury, and the MPEDA Director (Marketing), D.V. Prasad, said that on being successfully experimented, the indigenous model was found to be suitable for adoption by the fishing fleet. The workshop, attended by fishing vessel operators, fishing net manufacturers, financial institutions, NGOs and representatives of the fishery research institute, underscored the importance of reducing turtle mortality during trawling. The indigenous model, according to them, addressed the needs of both the conservation of turtles during trawling operations and the commercial fisheries. The incidental death of turtles during trawling operations is said to be high off the East Coast, particularly off Orissa, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, with 75,000 deaths reported during 1990-2002. Annually, 15,000 to 20,000 incidental turtle deaths are reported off the Indian coast.
