CBI probe sought into Nagappa's killing

By Our Staff Reporter

BANGALORE. Dec. 11. The Akhila Bharata Veerashaiva Mahasabha has demanded an inquiry by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) into the circumstances leading to the death of the former minister and JD(U) leader, Nagapppa.

Addressing presspersons here today, the Mahasabha President, Bhemanna Khandre, said the Government was responsible for the death of Nagappa. The Government had failed to respond adequately and in time to the demands made by the forest bandit, Veerappan, according to him. If the State Government had acted with the same urgency and zeal it had shown during the Rajkumar kidnap episode, it would have been possible to secure the safe release of Nagappa, he added. The Government failed to take action against Veerappan after the release of Mr. Rajkumar, he said. The death of Nagappa had shamed the six crore people of the State, and the Government should provide an explanation, Mr. Khandre said.

The Mahasabha had decided to organise December 9 every year as "black day" to protest against Nagappa's killing. It would organise a "jatha" from Kamagere after consulting Parimala Nagappa and other members of the late leader's family.

The procession, Mr. Khandre said, would highlight the failure of the Government in nabbing Veerappan and securing Nagappa's release, and make the people aware of the dangers of allowing criminals such as Veerappan to continue to operate.
