TD enrolment drive evokes good response

By Our Staff Reporter

KHAMMAM Dec. 11. The Telugu Desam party's membership drive evoked good response in Khammam, according to the Minister for Roads and Buildings, Tummala Nageswara Rao, and the TDP district convenor, Macha Srinivasa Rao, on Wednesday.

Addressing a press conference here, they said the party cadre launched a door-to-door enrolment drive and enrolled 3.44 lakh members. They included 62,150 active members.

The Minister said the net increase in the party membership in the district was 1.16 lakhs. The growth rate in the party membership could be the highest in the State. He attributed the success of the drive to the coordinated efforts made by the newly nominated convenor and the constituency level in-charges.

He said there was a substantial increase in the membership in all the nine Assembly constituencies.

The constituency-wise break-up of the membership is 73,100 in Sathupalli, 45,325 (Burgumpadu), 44,440 (Madhira), 34,450 (Paleru), 33,995 (Sujathanagar), 30,235 (Khammam), 28,000 (Bhadrachalam), 27,690 (Kothagudem) and 27,470 in Yellandu. The Minister said the party programmes continued to enjoy the support of the people. So was the case with the policies of the Government.

"The Chief Minister, N. Chandrababu Naidu's commitment to welfare has created confidence among the people. The Opposition parties were losing their ground as the TDP cadres were able to reach out to all sections," the Minister said.

The Minister assured all support to the lives and properties of the residents of Vikram Nagar who defected from the CPI(ML New Democracy) to join the Telugu Desam Party. Led by the village leader, Boda Papa Rao, a large number of residents of the village met the Minister and sought protection. They complained that the CPI(ML New Democracy) was holding out serious threats after their defection from the party.

They feared attacks on the village from the armed dalams of the party. The Sujathanagar constituency in-charge, Potla Nageswar Rao, was also present.
