Inaugurating the workshop, Dr. Menon observed that the DRIP could unleash rural employment opportunities at a time when industries and agriculture sectors were in crisis.

Thrissur district was selected as the second district in the State after Palakkad to implement the DRIP project for the year 2002-'07 and has made a credit projection of Rs. 1,116.93 crores during the project period of five years as per the district potential survey.

The project was also expected to provide employment to more than 1.23 lakh people.

The project was formally inaugurated by the District Collector on March 19, 2002.

The workshop was meant for the senior officers of the stakeholders of the project, namely Bankers, District Industries Centre (DIC), State Government Departments, KVIC, KVIB, Kudumbashree and NGOs.

The workshop was expected to create awareness and mobilise the opinion of all stakeholders to create a conducive atmosphere for the identification of potential rural activities and also steps to be initiated by the stakeholders in the district to achieve the desired goal.

A specialised team led by the deputy general manager, Nabard, Thiruvananthapuram, S. N. A. Jinnah, will be leading the workshop.

The deliberations at the workshop was expected to result in the culmination of self-targeted plan with specific output indicators like credit requirements, number of units likely to be set up, employment generation and identification of action points.

The workshop would also provide a forum for sharing of experiences in this field by the participants.
