Judicious use of water stressed

By Our Staff Reporter

NELLORE DEC. 11. The District Collector, G. Anantha Ramu, has asked people to judiciously use water.

Addressing a meeting of various heads of departments at the Golden Jubilee Hall here on Wednesday, the District Collector said it was the duty of all to take appropriate measures to preserve every drop of water. He wanted officials to create awareness among people about the issue in view of severe drought conditions in the district for the last four years. The Collector expressed concern over the growth of aquaculture units which resulted in excessive use of water.

He said that the State Government formulated the State Water, Land and Trees Authority on September 5 to levy fine ranging from Rs. 1,000 to Rs. 5,000 in case of felling of trees and indiscriminate cutting. Workshops all over the district would be held in the coming months to create awareness among people about the Act. Mr. Anantha Ramu asked officials to prepare reports pertaining to borewells and open wells. It was also the duty of MROs to send proposals for the same to district headquarters, he said.

The district groundwater officer, Subbarami Reddy, said that groundwater level had gone down alarmingly due to scant rainfall resulting in severe scarcity of drinking water. There was every need to replenish the level of groundwater under the `Neeru-meeru' programme. The official disclosed that farmers desirous of having new borewells and open wells had to seek prior permission of the department.

The DFO, Venkaiah, the Project Director, Water Management Society, Subbarami Reddy, and other officials spoke.
