According to G. Subramanyam, Director of the SVIMS, out of 30 centres in the country that are offering DM (Cardiology) course, only 21 are approved by the MCI and similarly in respect of the M.Ch., (C.T.Surgery), out of 13 centres offering the course, hardly five are approved by the Centre. In the case of M.Ch.(Urology), SVIMS-- a deemed university becomes one of the nine centrally-approved centres in the country offering the course. The DM (Doctorate in Medicine) and M.Ch. (Master of Chiuraagee) degrees are three-year courses available for those completing M.D/M.S and the two are the highest medical degrees in the field in India. Dr. Subramanyam claimed legitimate pride in the SVIMS getting the approval to start the two superspeciality courses said that it was not without the institutiuon getting through the rigorous tests and meeting the high standards set for the purpose, that it could get initially the MCI's and then the central government's approval to start the courses. It is a dream coming true for the institute, he said. Tracing the milestones achieved by the SVIMS in the recent years, he cited the institute getting into its kitty, a centrally-approved course, Diploma in National Board Courses (DNB) in three Divisions. Dr. Subramanyam said that the WHO at the instance of the ICMR selected SVIMS as one of the three centres in the country to develop IT-based applications, the other two centres being the ones set-up at Sikkim and Wardha. The ICMR was contemplating holding a national-level conference at the SVIMS in this connection in February, 2003. He claimed that under the recently introduced, `Pranadanam' scheme aimed at providing total free medical aid to the poor, 400 patients were treated and medical aid of Rs.1.5 crore was provided.
