Minister's effigy burnt for cuts in `Khadgam'

By Our Staff Reporter

TIRUPATI Dec. 11. The Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) has criticised the Minister for Home and Cinematography, T. Devender Goud, for effecting a cut in some scenes in the film `Khadgam,' as sought by a section of viewers. The Minister's effigy was also burnt on Wednesday at the crowded Group Theatres area in the town, where over half a dozen cinema halls are located.

The activists, taking exception to the Minister giving his nod for a cut in the already-censored film, spewed venom on him for not going into the entirety of the issue and the relevance of such scenes in making clear the point sought to be driven home. Such acts could even show the Minister's patriotism and integrity under bad light, they warned.

Addressing the gathering, the BJYM's State executive member, Samanchi Srinivas, said the film was not targeted at Muslims and only showcased the need for national integration. The dialogues, said to be `inflammatory', were aimed at Pakistan. He wanted the leaders of MIM and Congress be arrested under POTA for supporting Pakistani terrorists.

The speakers wondered why there was a furore over the showing of a patriotic film, which only portrayed the ill deeds of our neighbouring country, even while films promoting sex, violence and treachery were being exhibited without any inhibition and watched by all sections. The BJYM suspected the announcement of police PR official, Shujath Ali, that cuts would be effected in the movie, as aimed at disrupting religious harmony and urged the Government not to give in to the pressure tactics of the intolerant.

Our Staff Reporter from Nellore writes:

Sympathisers of BJYM burnt the effigy of Devender Goud accusing him of forcibly enforcing the deletion of certain scenes in the film `Khadgam.'

They demanded that the Government should take stern measures against those who were extending support to terrorist elements and detain them under POTA.
