Parents told to respond to the aspirations of children

By Our Staff Correspondent

MANGALORE DEC. 11 . It is the duty of parents to respond to the aspirations of their children in the same way that they wanted their parents to, the noted writer, Siddalinga Pattana Shetty, has said.

Participating in the valedictory function of the jatha organised as part of "Makkala Masotsava" and Human Rights Day as the chief guest here on Tuesday, he said while every parent hoped to give the very best to their children, they were not always able to do so for various reasons.

Children were the future of the nation and they deserved to get the very best. He noted that a nation could hope to prosper only when children were able to enjoy real childhood unfettered by burdens.

Most often children went astray and became troublesome due to lack of parental love, he said.

The Deputy Commissioner, A.K. Monnappa, said it was important to recognise the rights of others while ensuring that the right of an individual was upheld. Various voluntary agencies and non-governmental organisations such as Valored had rendered yeoman service in ensuring that children's rights were protected in the district.

He said the Secretary, Department of Labour, had directed the district administration to consider the possibility of declaring the district child-labour free. The final declaration would have to wait for ratification by a competent authority, he said.

The district in-charge minister, B. Ramanath Rai, urged parents to ensure that they fully met their responsibilities towards their children. It was important for parents to understand the problems of children and take steps to solve them. He also asked them to ensure that they provided education to children as well.

Rita Noronha of School of Social Work, Roshni Nilaya, presided over the function. The Director of Valored, Renni D'Souza, spoke about the month-long campaign aimed at ensuring implementation of children's rights. Renuka, representing children, and the coordinator of the event, Hameed Manjeshwar, were present.
