Bababudangiri: BJP leaders draw flak

By Our Special Correspondent

SHIMOGA Dec. 11. Taking strong exception to the reported statement by the Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Assembly, Jagadish Shettar, and the Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Council, D.H.Shankara Murthy, that the idol of Dattatreya would be installed at the Datta Peetha on Bababudangiri Hills in Chikmagalur District to "honour" the religious sentiments of the Hindus, the Organising Committee of the Bababudangiri Souhardata Samavesha has warned that doing any such thing would not only disturb communal harmony but also amount to violation of the High Court order.

Addressing presspersons here on Wednesday, Rajendra Chenni, Head, Postgraduate Department of English, Kuvempu University, and member of the committee, said it was the responsibility of the State Government and the district administration to ensure that the status quo was maintained.

He said the BJP leaders' suggestion went against the High Court order which had made it clear that nothing should be done to disturb the present arrangement and that the status quo as it prevailed before 1976 should be maintained.

Prof. Chenni said that members of the Bababudangiri Souhardata Samavesha would meet the authorities with a request that nothing should be done to disturb the status quo.

He said that over the years Bababudangiri had remained a fine symbol of communal harmony with the Hindus, Muslims, and people of other faiths treating it as a place of worship.

Prof. Chenni regretted that the Sangh Parivar was trying to convert Bababudangiri into a nerve centre to spread communal politics.
