NEW DELHI DEC. 11. The President, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, has stressed the importance of creating a "knowledge-based society,'' which in turn would help India update and reinforce its strengths in industrial and agricultural sectors.

The President was speaking at a function at the Rashtrapati Bhavan after accepting a copy of K.Venkatasubramanian's book, `India as a knowledge superpower.'

In his introductory remarks, the author, a member of the Planning Commission, quoted the Tamil poet, Tiruvalluvar, remarking 2000 years ago that knowledge was a weapon available to society and individuals.

Dr. Venkatasubramanian also quoted from the foreword to the book written by N.R. Narayana Murthy: "economic development and growth cannot be isolated from social development and a true knowledge society should lead to social transformation.''

The author also announced that the royalty from the book would be donated to "orphanages and homes for handicapped children as they are near and dear to the heart of our exalted President.''
