Letters to the Editor
Sir, With reference to your Editorial, "Tragedy and resolve" (Dec. 10), I would like to point out that a large majority of the people in the country is of the view that politicians in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu do not lend moral support to the Special Task Force (STF) to catch Veerappan to avoid exposing skeletons in their cupboards. Some people fear that if at all Veerappan is caught, he will be shot dead to protect those powerful vested interests. Your Editorial made clear (i) the need for a relentless pursuit to catch Veerappan by effective coordination between the two Governments; and (ii) the need to ensure that chauvinistic elements in both the States do not take advantage of the killing of Nagappa to foment trouble. B.V. Kumar, Nellore Sir, It is clear from the book Veerappan's Prize Catch: Rajkumar by the former DGP, C. Dinakar, that Veerappan uses a cellular phone. There are enough gizmos in the market which can easily track down its signals. The STF should acquire such modern equipment. Also, the combined STF of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu should be extended to include police personnel from Kerala as Veerappan may slip into Kerala forests. The three States should form a joint intelligence network to track the brigand's movements in the inter-State border areas. R. Venkatesh Iyengar, Gulbarga Hyderabad
