Ramesh holds Lukacs

Chennai Dec. 11. International Master R.B. Ramesh drew with seasoned Grandmaster Peter Lukacs of Hungary in the third round to remain on top in the First Saturday Grandmaster chess tournament at Budapest on Tuesday.

IM Csaba Balogh of Hungary scored a win to join Ramesh in the lead with two points from three games. Eight rounds remain in the 12-player round-robin tournament. Ramesh needs six points from the remaining eight rounds for his next Grandmaster norm.

Ramesh played with the black pieces and offered a draw after his 11th move and Lukacs accepted the offer. Overnight joint leader Aarthie Ramaswamy suffered a defeat in her very first game with the black pieces, in 37 moves. In a closed Sicilian opening, her higher-rated opponent — International Master Dimo Werner of Germany — closed all open lines and played with clinical precision to outplay Aarthie by trooping in with his rook. The fall of a vital queen rook pawn and the threatened exchange of rooks left Aarthie in a hopeless position and forced her to resign. Aarthie is on 1.5 points from three games in the Group B category. She now needs six points from eight rounds for her Woman Grandmaster norm. FIDE Master Adam Popovics of Hungary leads this section with 2.5 points from three games.
