`Chennai encouraged music, arts'

CHENNAI Dec. 9 . The nama sangeerthanams of composers had been comercialised and artistes were aware of the trend, K.S. Venkataraman, secretary, Mylapore Fine Arts Club, said today.

Inaugurating a three-day music festival of the Tirupoonthuruthy Narayana Tirtha Swamigal Trust here, Mr. Venkataraman lauded the efforts of the Trust to build a mani mantapam and wanted the artistes who performed at the music festival to contribute generously to the project.

N. S. Srinath, Deputy General Manager, Canara Bank, said unlike Bangalore from where he hailed, Chennai encouraged music and the arts. He wanted the organisers to make the festival a week-long affair.

Others who participated inaugural included V. Krishnaswamy, Chief Regional Manager, Indian Overseas Bank, sponsors of the festival.
