Joint operations begin, to nab bandit

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI DEC. 9. Tamil Nadu and Karnataka have begun joint operations to track down the forest bandit, Veerappan, following the killing of the former Karnataka Minister, H. Nagappa.

The chief of the Tamil Nadu Special Task Force, W.I. Dawaram, proceeded to Sathyamangalam, where he was joined by the Karnataka Government's advisor and former DGP, T. Srinivasulu, for discussions on finalisation of a strategy to nab the bandit. As the body of Nagappa was found within the Karnataka limits, the focus of the joint operations would be on the forest terrain in that State.

The Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, who began a three-day conference of District Collectors and police officers, ordered the SPs to return to the districts tomorrow in view of a tense situation prevailing in the areas bordering Karnataka. The meeting with the SPs was advanced by a day.
