Hegde shocked by tragedy

By Our Special Correspondent

Bangalore Dec. 9. The former Chief Minister and JD(U) supremo, Ramakrishna Hegde, has expressed shock at the tragic end to the abduction of the former minister, H. Nagappa, and said the State Government, in association with the Tamil Nadu Government and the Centre, should launch an operation to bring Veerappan to book.

In a statement here today, he said, "Nagappa was a very noble person and it is unfortunate that a cruel person like Veerappan snuffed out his life. I never expected that the kidnap would come to such an end."

The former Prime Minister, H.D. Deve Gowda, in a condolence message, said the State Government, without wasting any more time, should immediately launch combing operations and apprehend the brigand. "The State Government failed to take appropriate steps at the right time to obtain the safe release of Nagappa. I pray God to provide strength to Nagappa's family to bear the loss."

The Vice President of the JD(U), Pradeep Kumar Reddy, said the death of Mr. Nagappa was a great loss to his family which had moved heaven and earth to obtain his safe release. His death was not just a loss to his family but to the State.

A condolence meeting was held at the State JD(U) headquarters earlier in the day. Afterwards, all the leaders, including the State unit President, C. Byre Gowda, and the Floor Leader of the party in the Legislative Assembly, P.G.R. Sindhia, left for Kamagere in a convoy.
