Protest marches taken out in Bidar, Bijapur

By Our Staff Correspondent

BIDAR Dec. 9. The district units of the Opposition parties today made a scathing attack on the Chief Minister, S.M. Krishna, and the Home Minister, Mallikarjun Kharge, and demanded their resignation in the wake of the killing of the former minister, H. Nagappa, who had been abducted by the forest brigand, Veerappan.

Police made elaborate security arrangements throughout the district to deal with the situation.

The BJP and the JD(S) took out separate processions to the Deputy Commissioner's office and submitted memorandums addressed to the Governor seeking the dismissal of the Krishna government for its failure to protect the life of Mr. Nagappa.

The BJP leaders, including the State Yuva Morcha president, Raghuanthrao Malkapure, the district unit president, Ashok Guttedar, and the general secretary, Shivaraj Gandage, assembled at Ambedkar Circle and raised slogans against the Government.

In a memorandum addressed to the Governor, they criticised the Government for failing to get Mr. Nagappa released.

The JD(S), led by the district unit president, Amritrao Chimkode, took out a procession from their party office to Basaveshwar Circle and then to the Deputy Commissioner's office.

The JD(U) leaders held a meeting at the party office and observed a minute's silence in memory of the slain leader.

In a statement, the JD(U) leader, Basavaraj Patil Attur, blamed the Krishna government. "It mishandled the issue from the beginning, resulting in the killing of Mr Nagappa," he said.
