The Rs. 1,300 crore cutting tools industry has been unanimous in its demand for a separate R&D facility on the lines of institutions in the U.K. and U.S. Most senior executives in the industry were of the opinion that as technology in the cutting tool industry was advancing a rapid rate, a separate institution was necessary to catalyse the R&D effort. On a separate note, technical experts said with the rapid rate of change, there was a constant need to train and reskill people and an institute would reduce the cost involved. Finally, with quality being the new buzzword for success both on the domestic and exports front, there was need for a centralised testing facility equipped with the latest equipment for evaluating various types of tools and with a database covering all aspects of cutting tool design and machine data. At the special seminars organised at ToolTech, one of the topics discussed was "Metrology for cost effective production". Speakers pointed out that metrology products were no longer an additional cost of manufacturing and that accurate production helped reduce wastage and cost of production.
