``We have tried to understand as to what has been going on and where we stand. It is for the Government to take action,'' the Chairman of the three-member committee, V. Ramakistayya, a former Vice-Chancellor of the Osmania University, told reporters before leaving for Hyderabad. The committee did not believe that the students who submitted their case against the AU authorities would be victimised or that some students were forced by their teachers to depose in favour of the administration. "We tried to create an atmosphere of fairness. None was prevented from meeting us or kept under a watch,'' Prof. Ramakistayya, said. Campus college principals and chief wardens might have been with the committee when it visited the hostels and solicited opinion from the students who might not have come out against the authorities in the presence of these officials, but they were given quite a long time when they met the committee at the Circuit House, the committee chief pointed out. He also indicated that the AU authorities were planning to invite applications for research programmes soon. The committee had received numerous representations, the chairman said and declared that no more representations would be received. Asked why the committee members had been taken to the Nagarjuna hostel for inspection when they were scheduled to visit the Satavahana hostel, which was decked up for the visit and where several students leaders were waiting, the chairman replied that they wanted to examine the conditions in the Nagarjuna hostel where it was alleged that the photographs of Mahatma Gandhi and Babasaheb Ambedkar were removed.
