Andhra University students to continue stir

By Our Staff Reporter

VISAKHAPATNAM DEC. 9. The Andhra University Students Rights Protection Committee demanded that the report of the three-member high-level committee constituted by the Government to probe into allegations made against the Vice-Chancellor, should be implemented and not ignored like in the case of reports of the previous committees.

The committee decided to continue its protest till the authorities conceded its demands or if the Committee's report failed to favour the students. The students would wear black badges from November 11, as part of their ongoing protest, the committee's representatives told at a press conference here on Monday.

Reacting to the representations submitted to the probe committee, the students alleged that some of the organisations were "bogus''.

The parents committee which supported the Vice-Chancellor should have reacted when the students were suspended and lathicharged in the past, if it was a really genuine organisation, the committee said. During the visit of the hostels the presence of Principals and wardens with the Committee prevented the students from coming out with their problems and the facts about the functioning of the hostels. The students regretted that the Dean (students affairs) of the university had not involved himself even though the students were on an agitation.

The students committee also pointed out that only after the agitation that the university administration had conceded some of the demands (like attendance). Hence, the circular barring agitations in the campus should be withdrawn as it had become redundant.

The committee also demanded that the authorities postpone the examinations scheduled to commence on December 23 in view of the National Games commencing in the second week, followed by the Christmas and Sankranti festivals. They wanted the examinations held from January 20.

The representatives of the students committee, Pithani Prasad, Shyamsundar, Moses, Raja, Bapuji, Y. Bhaskar, Venkateswarlu, and others spoke.
