Cong. candidates injured in stone-throwing

GANDHINAGAR DEC. 9. The Congress candidate for the Kadi Assembly seat in Mehsana district, Baldev Thakore, and the Mehsana Lok Sabha by-election nominee, Maneklal Patel, were injured in stone-throwing by BJP workers today.

Police said the BJP workers gheraoed the Congressmen and started pelting stones on them. Mr. Thakore sustained injuries on the head and was taken to hospital in Ahmedabad. His BJP opponent in Kadi is the Finance Minister, Nitin Patel.

Meanwhile, elections to the Surat West constituency was countermanded following the death of the BJP candidate, Hemmant Chapatwala, today.

The 59-year-old Mr. Chapatwala, a Minister of State for Law and Judiciary in the Narendra Modi Cabinet, had been ailing for some time. He had been re-nominated as his health had shown some improvement.
