The Minister said that measures were also being taken to raise the status of the district and Victoria hospitals to that of a general hospital. The Minister, however, said that the amount sanctioned would not be fully entrusted to the development committee of the hospital for various reasons. The projects will include an IC Unit at a cost of Rs. 15 lakhs, bystander facilities to be constructed at a cost of Rs. 10 lakhs, a keyhole surgery unit at a cost of Rs. 15 lakhs, a special unit for newborns costing Rs. 10 lakhs, a cardiology unit costing Rs. 15 lakhs and Rs. 10 lakhs for purchasing new gadgets. The Minister said that the World Bank had sanctioned an aid of Rs. 810 crores for the Health sector in the State and from that amount an allocation would be made for constructing an 11-floor building for the district hospital. On the occasion the Labour Minister, Babu Divakaran, inaugurated the Diabetic Clinic of the hospital. The Audiogram was inaugurated by the District Panchayat President, K. Devaki, and the Drug Bank was inaugurated by the Health Director, V.K. Rajan. Earlier the District Hospital superintendent, V. Rajan, welcomed the gathering and Regional Medical Officer, V. Pratapan, proposed a vote of thanks.
