Telephone lineman convicted of graft

VISAKHAPATNAM DEC. 9. The Special Judge for CBI Cases, G. Anjaneya Reddy, on Monday, found T. Krishna Murthy, a lineman of the Makkuva telephone exchange in Vizianagaram, guilty of demanding and accepting a bribe for installing a telephone connection and undertake repairs. He sentenced him to undergo imprisonment for one year and to pay a total fine of Rs. 4,000.

According to the prosecution conducted by the Senior Public Prosecutor, B. Ravindranath, the accused was caught red-handed by CBI while accepting a bribe of Rs. 500 from the complainant, L. Mohan Rao, in 2000. Krishnamurthy was sentenced to undergo rigorous imprisonment for a period of one year and also to pay a fine of Rs. 2,000 and in default of paying the fine to under go three months of simple imprisonment, under each of the offences under Sec. 7 and 13 (1)(d) read with 13(2) of the prevention of Corruption Act of 1988 (for a total fine of Rs. 4,000), with the sentences to run concurrently.

Railway staffer dismissed

According to a press release from the SP, CBI, A. Prabhakara Rao, here on Monday, the Senior Travel Inspector of Accounts at Vijayawada Railway Station, K. J. Srinivasa Rao, was dismissed from service by SCR after being convicted of graft.

The CBI court here found Srinivasa Rao guilty of demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs. 7,500 from two employees for not recommending any action against them in a matter of exchanging privilege passes. He was convicted to undergo three years of imprisonment and to pay a total fine of Rs. 20,000. The disciplinary authority of SCR dismissed him from service following the conviction, under the Railway Servants (discipline and appeal) Rules of 1968.
