A.P. tops list in forest encroachment

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI Dec. 9. Andhra Pradesh has attained the dubious distinction of topping the list of States with the highest encroachment on forest land.

According to the information collected from the State Governments and Union Territories, in Andhra Pradesh 3,413.22 sq km of forest land is under encroachment.

It is closely followed by Assam with 2,547 sq km.

Chattisgarh and Karnataka figure in the third and fourth positions with 1,505 sq km and 1090 sq km respectively having been encroached upon.

However, Maharashtra is not far behind with encroachment on 936.10 sq km.

The record of the northern States is comparatively better.

While, Haryana figured at the tail end of the list of 25 States and Union Territories compiled by the Centre.

The Government has instructed State Governments to evict the encroachers in a time-bound manner.
