dated December 10, 1952: Eisenhower prepares to take over

America's President-elect, Mr. Dwight D. Eisenhower, opened a formal conference with advisers and future members of his Government less than two hours after they boarded the cruiser "Helena" on the 8th. The Korean war was believed to be the main topic of discussion, but Press Secretary James Hagerty told reporters there would be no official announcement of subjects discussed or decisions that might be reached.

Reports that a definite military programme had already been decided upon were discounted by a reliable source said to be close to the President-elect. Mr. Eisenhower was joined by his top Administration aides for a closed-door conference. Led by the newly-appointed Secretary of State, Mr. John Foster Dulles, they were led over to the Helena within a few minutes of the vessel's arrival. Mr. Hagerty told reporters that the President-elect might not disclose any plans until after he entered office on January 20. The conference was to continue until the ship reached Pearl Harbour. There, those aboard the cruiser were to be joined by military leaders and advisers for at least two more days of discussions.
