dated December 10, 1952: Sriramulu's Condition Grave

On the 7th, the 50th day of his fast unto death in Chennai for securing a separate Andhra province, doctors examining Mr. Potti Sriramulu said that hiccoughs and vomiting had made his condition very grave. Heart sounds were feebler and not well-heard. Moaning and exhaustion had grown severe. The fasting man's mind was clear, but he was totally disinclined to hear, see or speak. On the 9th, Mr. Sriramulu was informed of the proceedings in the Council of States and particularly the Vice-President's statement that Mr. Sriramulu might break his fast soon. But pressmen who met Mr. Sriramulu were told he had no intention of giving up the fast. Mr. V.V. Giri, Labour Minister, said in a telegram urging him to break his fast, "You have drawn the attention of the whole country and the authorities to the necessity of the Andhras securing a separate State. I would earnestly appeal to you to break your fast to enable leaders and Government to consider this issue in a calmer atmosphere and find ways and means of solving the problem immediately."
