Giving this information to presspersons here on Saturday, K.V. Sharatchandra, Superintendent of Police, said this was one of the steps taken to prevent crime. According to him, there were reports of naxalites frequently visiting Bellary and staying here with their sympathisers. In addition, a survey of vehicles bearing Andhra Pradesh registration was being carried out as a precautionary measure. He said the district police had laid emphasis on detection, and recovered property worth Rs. 42.5 lakh stolen in incidents of robbery and burglary during the year. Raids on "matka" and gambling dens had enabled them to seize stake amount to the tune of Rs. 7.37 lakh and Rs. 5.39 lakh, respectively. A sum of Rs. 16.5 lakh had been collected as spot fines from motorists for violating traffic rules, he added. To regulate traffic on the busy roads in Bellary, he said Car Street had been declared a one-way stretch. Efforts were on to ease the parking problem on Bangalore Road and Car Street, he added. He said the crime rate during the year was on the decline. One case of dacoity, 18 cases of robbery, 174 cases of burglary, and 250 cases of theft were reported. Police conducted raids at three places and nabbed dacoits who were preparing to commit crimes, he added.
