"We suspect this has been running for several years now", the ADGP, CB-CID, S. Ramani, told reporters today, announcing the arrests and the seizure of thousands of bogus certificates, rubber stamps and other materials.

The department was casting a net across the country to trace more people involved in the racket. It would also contact universities and recipients to understand the magnitude of the gang's operations, Mr. Ramani said.

Officials identified the arrested as Rajamanickam, A. Palani, Periasamy, Venkatesan and S.Rajendran.

According to the CB-CID officials, the gang was involved in preparing counterfeit degree and post graduate certificates and mark statements of the Madras University, the Annamalai University, the Mysore University, mark statements of the Bharathiya Shiksha Parishad, Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, conduct and transfer certificates of schools and colleges, diploma certificates of the Department of Technical Education, course completion certificates of polytechnic institutions, provisional national trade certificates of ITI, migration certificates and diploma certificates in teacher education, besides bogus birth, death and community certificates.

In October, the CB-CID had arrested Chinnapayan, who carried counterfeit non-judicial stamp papers, Andhra Pradesh court fee stamps and Madras University and higher secondary school certificates.

On interrogation, he revealed the existence of a racket in bogus certificates in the city, which led to the arrest of the gang.
