Four policemen killed in Manipur ambush

IMPHAL DEC. 8. At least four policemen were killed while the Ukhrul district Superintendent of Police escaped unhurt in an ambush by heavily armed militants at New Heaven area in the district today, official sources said.

The reports said that the militants sprayed bullets from both sides of the hilly road when the police party led by the SP, Manglemjao Singh, reached the spot, about 30 km northeast of here, at around 1530 hours.

The police returned fire but the militants escaped into the jungles. Casualty, if any, on the side of the ultras was not immediately known.

The identity of the militants was still unknown though the NSCN(I-M) cadres were reportedly active in the area.

Security reinforcements have been sent and top police officials rushed to the spot, the sources said.
