Double for Amir

The winners of the World Cup badminton championship for the disabled, which concluded in Bangalore on Sunday.

BANGALORE Dec. 8. Enthusiasm and enterprise came to the fore as disability was overshadowed. And none displayed this more than the Israeli pair of Levy Amir and Baba Yossi on the concluding day of the inaugural World Cup 2002 badminton championship for the disabled at the KBA Raheja Cours here this evening.

The high-fives and racquet tapping and bear-hug with the winning point, said it's own tale.

Levy Amir, the 25-year-old from Israel was the dominant partner in the 15-4, 15-6 triumph over Michelsen Quincy and Hollar Ton of Holland in the Wheelchair I doubles final. Levy had, earlier in the day, downed Michelsen for the singles title as well, winning 15-7, 15-9.

Weerasinghe a Corporal in the Sri Lankan Army overcame Shalon Simon of Israel in the Wheelchair II singles final at 15-3, 15-6.

Russia's Edward Karkanov of Russia downed India's hope Ramesh Tikaram 15-5, 15-6 in the sitting singles category. The twosome, however, went on to record three straight wins in the four-team league for the sitting doubles title.

The results (finals):

Standing Lower (singles): Chung Tu Liang (Tai) bt Chung Hou Chiang (Tai) 15-4, 17-16. Doubles: Chung Hou Chiang/Chung Tu Liang (Tai) bt Mohd. Noor Azam/Hanapiah Mohd. (Mal) 15-7, 15-7.

Standing Upper (singles): Meng Yan Lee (Tai) bt Cheng Che Lin (Tai) 15-3, 15-7. Doubles: Meng Yan Lee/Cheng Che Lin (Tai) bt Bachar Eyal/A. Yaniv (Isr) 15-0, 15-4.

Sitting (singles): Edward Karkanov (Rus) bt Ramesh Tikaram (Ind) 15-5, 15-6.

Wheelchair I (singles): Levy Amir (Isr) bt Michelsen Quincy (Ned) 15-7, 15-9. Doubles: Levy Amir/Baba Yossi (Isr) bt Michelsen Quincy/Hollar Ton (Ned) 15-4, 15-6.

Wheelchair II (singles): Weerasinghe (SL) bt Shalon Simon (Isr) 15-3, 15-6.
