Well-equipped general hospitals in taluks by March end: Minister

SORAB (Shimoga Dt.) Dec. 8 . The Minister for Health and Family Welfare and Information, Kagodu Thimmappa, said here on Sunday that general hospitals with more than 50 beds would be taken over by the Health Department from the zilla panchayats to ensure their better management. He was speaking at the inauguration of the two-day free medical check-up camp, organised by the Chandrahas Trust, here.

The minister said 204 taluk and community hospitals in the State were developed at an estimated cost of Rs. 560 crore.

It was proposed to set up well-equipped general hospitals by the end of March in all taluk headquarters, he said and added that 210 public health centres and public health units would be developed soon.

Mr. Thimmappa said the medical and para-medical staff would be appointed in the taluk-level hospitals by the end of this month. These hospitals would be asked to conduct blood donation and eye check-up camps regualrly. He was in consultation with the Minister for Rural Development and Panchayat Raj, M.Y. Ghorpade, about the possibility of holding these camps at the gram panchayat-level.

The former Chief Minister and Shimoga MP, S. Bangarappa, inaugurated the general hospital here. Police quarters, barrage-cum-bridge, and embroidery training centre for the banjara women were also inaugurated on the occasion.

The foundation was laid for the construction of the office of the Police Sub Inspector. Title deeds were presented to "bagair hukum" cultivators.

The Minister of State for Town Municipal Administration, S. Kumar Bangarappa, said over 15,000 poor patients were expected to participate in the medical check up camp being held under the aegis of the Chandrahas Trust.

Nearly 200 doctors from various hospitals in Bangalore would examine the patients.

Shakuntala Bangarappa, the MLC, Shantaveerappa Gowda, the MLAs, G.D. Narayanappa and Mahalingappa, the President of the zilla panchayat, Rohini Nagaraj and Madhu Bangarappa, were present.
