In a press here, the Secretary of the CPI(M) district unit, K. Shankar, said though the diesel prices were reduced twice, there was no decrease in the bus fares. The CPI(M) would stage "bus roko" protests at the taluk headquarters and other places in the district. He charged that the District Administration had been insensitive to the needs of the people. In another press release, the Secretary of the Students Federation of India (SFI), district unit, Kaviraj S., said the federation would launch indefinite "rasta roko" on December 10, to protest against the 10 per cent increase in the bus fares by the Canara Bus Operators' Association. He said the students would boycott classes indefinitely. He charged that the District in-charge Minister, the MLAs, and the RTO, bowed to the wishes of the association, and declared an increase of 10 per cent from November 1. This amounted to a "daylight robbery" of more than 10 lakh passengers, he said. Though the price of diesel had been reduced twice in the past month, the Deputy Commissioner had refused to reduce the bus fares. It was not fair to stifle poor passengers to "safeguard the interests" of 250 bus operators, he said.
