Doctors protest against IMA leadership move

By Our Staff Reporter

KOLLAM Dec. 8. The alleged attempt by the Kerala branch leadership of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) to threaten the chairman of the IMA's kidney racket enquiry committee, Mohammed Ali, with the help of anti-socials at last week's State Working Committee meeting of the IMA has invited strong protests from a section of doctors.

In a statement issued here, 20 doctors have registered their protest against the move. "The allegation is grave and the silence maintained by the IMA State leadership over the issue compels us to believe that the same is true."

According to the statement signed by John Jacob, neuro surgeon attached to the Benziger Hospital here, such postures by the IMA leadership goes against the high ethical considerations of the medical profession "upheld by the majority of the practitioners''.

Condemning the "undemocratic means'' selected by the IMA leadership, the statement exhorts all doctors to "react honestly'' to the issue and be part of a larger movement to uphold the ethical values of the profession since the image of the profession stands tarnished.

The statement furthers says that the enquiry report on the racket has been tampered with. This in turn has created suspicion among the public about the honesty and integrity of the IMA. "All attempts to substitute truths with half-truths have to be resisted at all costs in the larger interests of the profession'', they stated.
